US retailer sorry over 'fiction' Bible label Posted: 20 Nov 2013 12:24 PM PST US retail giant Costco has apologized after copies of the Bible labeled as "fiction" were found on sale at one of its stores, triggering protests by Christian groups. Caleb Kaltenbach, a pastor at the Discovery Church in Simi Valley, California, tweeted a picture of the Holy Bible, with a bar-code price sticker clearly labeled "Fiction," last Friday. "Costco has Bibles for sale under the genre of FICTION. "DOES Costco sell The Koran under the genre of "FICTION" I WONDER ???" wrote Holly Bishop (@Southerngal1963) on the microblogging site. |

Church of England backs women bishops in principle Posted: 20 Nov 2013 11:17 AM PST The Church of England's ruling body voted overwhelmingly Wednesday in favour of proposals to allow women bishops. The General Synod voted 378 to eight in favour of the move, clearing the way for a historic vote which could take place as early as next year on introducing women bishops. The Church of England has been under intense pressure from the public and politicians to introduce female bishops since previous legislation narrowly failed to pass in the General Synod almost a year ago. Members of the Synod gathered in London were asked to give first approval to the proposals with a "declaration" by the Church's bishops setting out guidance for parishes which reject female ministry. |
Church of England paves way for women bishops in 2014 Posted: 20 Nov 2013 08:21 AM PST By Belinda Goldsmith LONDON (Reuters) - The Church of England's governing body voted overwhelmingly in favor of female bishops on Wednesday, ending a 20-year impasse that could see women ordained as senior clergy by the end of 2014. A vote on a package of measures to endorse women bishops was supported by 378 members of the General Synod while eight voted against and 25 abstained after months of behind-the-scenes talks to unite reformers and traditionalists. A year ago, a blocking minority succeeded in rejecting draft legislation on women bishops, leaving the church in crisis. "The train is on the tracks, the train is moving forwards, and we now have some stations to pass along the way but we can begin to see the end of this particular journey," the Bishop of Rochester James Langstaff told a news conference. |
